EARLIER IN THE year, a group of activists, academics, artists, students and trade unionists got together to launch Strike 4 Repeal.
Strike 4 Repeal called on the government to announce a referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment and was a show of solidarity for all of the people in this country who have been affected by the lack of abortion provision in Ireland.
Demonstrations took place all over the country and students staged walkouts from their lectures at the time of the strike.

There was an excellent turnout and the entirety of O’Connell Bridge in Dublin was occupied by people participating in the strike.
Now the people behind Strike 4 Repeal are proposing a second demonstration.
In a statement, the group announced that they are launching plans for a second national strike if the Government does not commit to a clear yes or no question on a referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.
The group say that since the demonstration in March of this year, the pro choice movement has seen progress, including liberal recommendations from the Citizens’ Assembly and ‘an indication from Leo Varadkar that a referendum will be held in 2018.’

Referencing the results of the Citizens’ Assembly, Strike 4 Repeal spokesperson Aoife Frances says:
They shared a video to Facebook to promote their new campaign.
It highlights the fact that every single day that this referendum is delayed means that another ten people are forced to travel abroad for access to healthcare.
They’re asking Irish people to pledge to support Strike 4 Repeal on this Google Form and to write to their political representatives requesting a simple and clear ‘yes or no’ question on the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.
